3 Ways to Effectively Protect Your Skin During Outdoor Activities

Outdoor activities such as cycling, equestrian, or even lounging around the beach are incredibly exciting. While sun protection is always the top priority when it comes to these activities, people often overlook just how much damage the sun can bring.

Too much exposure to the sun causes skin pigmentation and aging, as well as irreversible damages like eye damage and skin cancer. Experts also postulate that harmful UV rays can lower the immunity system, as the sun has the power to cause damage to the body long after you’ve retreated indoors.

With these detrimental effects in mind, sun protection must be taken seriously. Fortunately, there are plenty of ways you can protect yourself from the sun, especially as you enjoy outdoor activities. Here’s how:

1 – Apply your sunscreen as often as possible

You may have gotten yourself water-resistant sunscreen, but that doesn’t mean you only need to lather it once. Unfortunately, “sweatproof” or “waterproof” sunscreen is anything but, as they still fade from your skin after an extended period of time.

They fade in an even shorter period of time when you’re in the water or sweating, so make sure to reapply sunscreen every 40 to 80 minutes. Remember to read the product label, though, as not all formulas are created equally! You may need to follow a window time of less or more frequency, but never skip out on sunscreen reapplication!

2 – You need more than just your bottle of sunscreen

Contrary to popular belief, your sunscreen isn’t your main protection against the sun. If you wish to spend more time under the blazing heat, you’ll need to cover up. Sunscreen can only do so much, especially since you need to reapply it as the day unfolds.

You’ll need clothing and other accessories, such as a bike helmet with sun protection for cycling, or long sleeves for a beach trip. Sunscreen cannot block all the light rays emitted by the sun. Invest in sun-protective clothing for your skin, along with a good pair of sunglasses for your eyes—your body will thank you later!

3 – Control your sun exposure schedule

While investing in sunscreen and sun gear is important, the best way to avoid damaging UV rays is to simply stay indoors. You could opt to exercise before 10 AM or after 4 PM, as this is where the sun’s effects are milder.

If you find yourself sunburned, however, the best way to deal with it is through a buffered aspirin. The dosage will depend on your doctor’s prescription, and it’s best to mix in some petroleum jelly as a soothing agent. Allow your body to heal, hydrate, and avoid further damage—even if the sun’s rays are behind the clouds. The weather can be hard to predict, so it’s best to be as cautious as possible.

The Bottom Line

Spending time outdoors, especially through activities such as cycling, equestrian, and walks at the beach, can help boost your health. The mental and physical benefits are undeniable, as it lifts your mood, strengthens your immune system, and energises you.

However, failing to properly protect your skin from the sun’s damaging effects can cancel all those benefits out. Sunscreen is important, but it’s best to wear sun-protective gear. Avoiding the sun’s peak hours can help. As you continue with your favourite outdoor activities, keep our tips in mind!

Good

My review would be higher if the product was what I wanted - the widest part of the brim all the way around. I did enquire beforehand and this is the best I can do apparently. I ride mostly early mornings or late afternoons which is why I would prefer a wide all the way around brim.
I also use a neck buff.
I turned the brim around so the widest part is at the front.
All good so far - it seems sturdy.

Saving your skin with this helmet brim

Just received my helmet brim and completed my first 40 klm ride in strong gusty winds, 25-30 kph. More than happy with the brim, excellent sun protection and while I could definitely feel the wind more than with my normal bike helmet, it was not an issue. This brim will be fantastic on calmer days and gives you so much extra protection. I will be using this on every ride from now on. If you want to protect your face from sun damage, I thoroughly recommend this product.

Shade throughout India

We all throughly appreciated our Da Brim Rezzo Visors cycling in Kerala India. Easy to use once we did a bit of practice, very secure, the only time it caught the wind was at speed down hill. It did what it was designed to do by keeping the sun off our faces and as an added bonus, when it rained it kept the droplets off our sunnies...how good is that! Here we are on the East coast.

Convenient, effective, easy to use sun protection

My husband (who I gave it to) says “Easy to apply once I found their video online. Feels stable and increases ventilation and coolness at higher speeds.”
